Desert Yellow, 12" x 9"
Watercolour and Ink on Paper, Framed.
Framed Size: 16.5 x 12.5 inches.
"This was one of the first pieces in which I used black acrylic ink, and I loved it so much that I have continued to use it in the majority of my works to this day. I enjoyed playing with the fluidity of the ink to create large blocks of deep black, which could be contrasted with bright, translucent watercolors. Using a long liner brush, I worked on creating hair, inventing lush manes blowing in the wind and adding movement to the image. Drawing hair can imbue a painting with an emotional aspect that is on par with the eyes.
In this painting, we can also discern a landscape behind the main character. She appears to be in full control, situated in the middle of a vast territory that evokes freedom. The small leaves on her earrings resemble sprouts, symbolizing the beginning of a new life in what initially appears to be an arid and raw territory. Kay Nielsen's depiction of vegetation has always fascinated me, and the idea of using so much yellow came after seeing the large area of yellow in Ole Aakjaer's immense watercolor portraits."
Canadian artist Annie Duguay discovered her love for watercolors in 2018. This medium allowed her to reunite with the spontaneity and portability of drawing, but with the life of pigments and water. Something clicked and her production grew substantially. Her portraits allow her to turn the secrets and emotions about the people she meets into art. Today, Annie practices acupuncture and has been doing so for the last 15 years along with painting.
