Follow Me, 12" x 12"

"This was painted from a photo I took on the long drive to the cottage for Thanksgiving. We followed this car for a long time on the two lane highway and I wondered, who's in there? Where are they going?
Art reveals how the artist sees the world, and, if it’s successful, changes the way the viewer sees, in turn. Art transforms a boring drive you’ve done a million times into infinite moments of painterly possibility. Art makes you look again at a truck, at the light under a brewing fall storm, at roadwork and traffic cones and say, I have to paint that or, huh, that’s art? Art is transformative, art is play, art is...transporting!"

"In my work I’m attempting to take familiar, mundane scenes, scenes one may have always taken for granted and never have thought worthy of “art”, in order to make the viewer look again. I also distort and intensify the colours so as to slightly destabilize the viewer in that gaze, to disrupt their certainty or familiarity with place, perhaps prompting the discovery of something new, whether that be attention, appreciation, awe, discomfort, or something (hopefully) I’ve not even anticipated."
