"There's nothing like the light of a brewing late summer storm. I intensified the colours to give the familiar highway scene a feeling of being just slightly unreal, or surreal, making the viewer wonder if they really have seen this before.

Art reveals how the artist sees the world, and, if it’s successful, changes the way the viewer sees, in turn. Art transforms a boring drive you’ve done a million times into infinite moments of painterly possibility. Art makes you look again at a truck, at the light under a brewing fall storm, at roadwork and traffic cones and say, I have to paint that or, huh, that’s art? Art is transformative, art is play, art is...transporting!"

Petra Eperjesi is a settler Canadian of Eastern European descent and currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario.

"In my work I’m attempting to take familiar, mundane scenes, scenes one may have always taken for granted and never have thought worthy of “art”, in order to make the viewer look again. I also distort and intensify the colours so as to slightly destabilize the viewer in that gaze, to disrupt their certainty or familiarity with place, perhaps prompting the discovery of something new, whether that be attention, appreciation, awe, discomfort, or something (hopefully) I’ve not even anticipated."
