Amelia, 13" x 11"
Collage in a Vintage Frame.
13" x 11" x 0.75"
"This is a work that just came together without any preconceived idea. As pieces came together, it reminded me of Amelia Earhart. I remember doing a school project on her in grade 5, I pretended to interview her on a t.v. show, I knew everything about her, yet what I remember best (aside from being the first female to fly solo around the world) is that it scared me. I remember thinking "I would never do that". So this work is just a childhood memory, actually a childhood feeling."
Collecting is a continuous activity in art practice of Canadian artist Mina Vancardo. Magazines, books, handwritten notes, or a tiny scrap of textured paper are often the triggers that initiate and feed her collage work. The cutting process is a deliberate and focused action, while Mina Vancardo does not have the end product visioned at this point, the slow gestures of cutting, selecting and discarding are focused on feeling the line between her mind and her hands. Arranging the cut pieces is experimental; it can be quick and easy or slow and painful, but it is always intuitive.
