Democratic Republic of Toronganda, 24" x 36"
Acrylic and Ink on Canvas.
Democratic Republic of Toronganda combines the city of Toronto and the country of Uganda. This piece inspires the viewer to imagine the utopian green space that is achieved when the flora and fauna of Uganda is integrated with the urban landscape of the city of Toronto. While viewing this map, imagine sitting on the balcony of your high-rise living space, enjoying your morning beverage, while watching the rhinoceros graze. Your senses are tantalized by the sound of elephant grass swaying in the gentle breeze and the fragrance of eucalyptus. Quiet joy emerges as you sit in your enjoyment of all that modern Toronto offers while feeling the ancestral connection to the Motherland.
"My art makes the intangible tangible by making the impossible possible through imagination. I provide a detailed, visual representation of your ability to be in two places at the same time by combining two actual locations in one highly detailed map. The pieces I am submitting for consideration in this virtual exhibition offer a unique exploration of radiance and joy.
Joy in our lives is multi-layered and unique to each of us. Joy lives in complexity; where and who we are, how we got here and where we aspire to be. If you do not have a direct connection to the places represented in my works, I invite you to consider how those who have a connection contribute to our collective joy as humans. I also invite you to consider how I could create a map that would bring together the places that represent you and what brings you joy."
Born and raised in rural Nova Scotia, Phillip Bailey was raised in a tight-knit community where hard work and dedication were rewarded. He is a direct descendent of the Black Loyalist Rose Fortune and the grandson of folk artist Harold Cromwell. At an early age, Phillip showed an aptitude for art. This was fostered as a hobby but not a viable professional option. During his career in youth corrections, he used his interest in the combination of geography and art as a creative outlet for self-care. Phillip began working full-time as an artist in 2017, fulfilling both original commissions and selling limited-edition prints of his work.
