"This paintings is part of a series that combines the figurative with surreal elements into aesthetically pleasing paintings and explore the moments of transformation, which occur as we evolve into the people we are meant to be. Important to my vision is that the deliberate action of the individual is required to make lasting changes and this is a raw and emotional experience. The curatorial statement of "Journey of the Soul" could have been written for this artwork series, the themes are so closely matched.

'I was Here the Whole Time', also symbolizes the moment of transformation, specifically the moment of "becoming". In this painting I capture the moment of transition from old to new, stagnation to growth, hidden to revealed, reticence to expansiveness. The process of becoming who you are destined to be, to live your fullest and best life is filled with many such moments, but this moment I have captured is when that inner transformation becomes visible to others."

Canadian artist Andrea Filiatrault believes in the transformative power of making and viewing art and really enjoys trying to find ways to work out and express her ideas and history. She paints images of her body in scenes designed to evoke feelings of vulnerability and resilience at the moment of transformation. Also, the subjects in Filiatrault's paintings practice escapism, avoidance, obsessive behaviour, self examination and critique, but ultimately evolve.

Andrea Filiatrault has been training as an artist for over 10 years with private instructors and is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art program at the University of Waterloo. Andrea Filiatrault is also the program manager for the Grand River Artist Collective, a group of over 100 Waterloo Region artists with professional and developing practices. The goal of our organization is to provide opportunities for working artists and build community.
