Sunset Standout, 12" x 12"
Acrylic on Canvas.
"This painting is a reflection of my passion for highlighting the joy and beauty found within the city's forested areas. These natural spaces are nestled among the highways, transit paths, and growing high-rise communities, but are often tucked away deep within the city's ravines. My urban landscapes aim to expose and celebrate these radiant gems. They allow us to see the intricate detail and symbiosis of the natural and manufactured urban treasures that adorn our landscapes. Their rugged, often crude, beauty lulls us there in all seasons. We do not have a luxurious Muskoka escape; the urban forest is our playground."
Michelle Nichols is an elementary teacher and landscape & floral painter. Her art is inspired mainly by the urban landscapes found near her home in Toronto, from the rugged trails in the local ravines to the wildflowers blooming along the creeks and neighbourhood sidewalks, to the intricate patterns of the trees scattered throughout the nearby parks. Michelle tries to capture the city’s natural beauty with a touch of childlike whimsy and the fascination of someone seeing these not-so-ordinary urban treasures for the first time.
