Gypsum Watercolour and Acrylic on Canvas.

"Stumble upon a secret garden planted by the birds and the wind just for you. Is it mere coincidence that many months ago the seeds arrived from the sky and were covered just so? Over time, leaf drop turns to fertile soil and water makes its way to the covered seeds, the radiant sun warms the soil through the dappled light of the canopy just right, just so, to bring these flowers to bloom, electric with life, so they are perfect for your meeting. As it turn out, I don’t believe in coincidence, this secret garden was planted just for you, what a day to be alive. Capturing the fleeting moments of flora, I impress them into the clay to form the relief and I paint with joy, flowing colour to bring them back to life so that the chance of meeting on this beautiful day never fades from memory. Ohh the energy of spring, I can’t wait to feel your life in me!

Life itself is a good and precious gift. Years of working intimately with the fragility of flowers, dancing between the boundaries of optimal beauty and impending decay I began to thirst after the undiscovered secrets of immortalization. After the passing of my father from the effects of early onset Alzheimers my life changed course and here I am, taking the fleeting moments of nature and making them permanent.

I create shallow relief gypsum castings with elements of nature and flood them with painterly watercolour and acrylic. I focus my art practice on atmospheric exploration of the natural world. I express in colour, the essence of flowers, the mountains, the trees, the clouds. I continue my development pushing past simple singular impressions to capture an aura of full familiar land & floralscapes where I can bring in the dimensional characteristics and organic components of my subject, creating impressionist tactile art bringing them to life with vivid layers of colour. I take what is weak and make it strong."

Melissa Mulder creates Fresco Relief Artworks using organic objects as her drawing tools and pigments of watercolour and acrylic as the vibrant life force that wakes the Fresco. In her Hamilton, Ontario studio Melissa assembles the locally foraged or farmed elements to create the impressionistic gypsum relief which she then layers with beautiful pigments of watercolour and acrylic paint. Since sharing these works on social media, Melissa has enjoyed the support of passionate collectors sending her work out locally and abroad including collectors in the USA & Ireland.
