Brigitte Klassen

BIO

Brigitte Klassen is a Canadian watercolour artist based in the National Capital Region. Her practice explores femininity, identity, and transformation through the natural world, with paintings that consider presence, stillness, and the transience of life. Working primarily in transparent watercolour, Klassen combines technical precision with painterly spontaneity. Her compositions range from intimate studies to monumental works, using luminous layers of pigment, a wide tonal range, and carefully considered negative space to create depth, atmosphere, and presence. Mainly self-taught, she has devoted more than a decade to independent study and the development of her practice. While realism remains central to her approach, her interest extends beyond the outward appearance of her subjects to the personal and emotional narratives they may hold. Her work has been exhibited in juried and group exhibitions across Ontario.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the natural world and the human experience through watercolour, moving between intimate and monumental compositions. Across different subjects, I am interested in presence, atmosphere, identity and the ways we experience and respond to the world around us. Working in transparent watercolour, I combine technical precision with painterly spontaneity, building colour gradually through thin, luminous layers. A wide tonal range, from barely perceptible highlights to richly saturated shadows, creates depth and atmosphere. I consider negative space as carefully as the painted form itself, allowing each composition to breathe while establishing a sense of balance, movement and presence. My process begins with close observation and study, developing compositions that balance structure with fluidity. While realism provides a point of departure, I am less interested in simply reproducing what I see than in exploring what a subject might hold beyond its outward appearance. Ultimately, my paintings are invitations to look more closely, to consider what is changing, what endures and the many ways we continue to become.

NOTE FROM GALLERY'S CURATOR

"What I particularly admire about Brigitte Klassen's work is her remarkable technical command of watercolour and her ability to challenge our expectations of the medium. There is something especially compelling about the relationship between the monumental scale of her compositions and the inherent delicacy of watercolour on paper. Her paintings command attention without losing the lightness, transparency, and sensitivity that make the medium so distinctive. Watercolour holds a fascinating place in art history. Long associated with preparatory studies, botanical illustration, and intimate works on paper, it has also been embraced by artists such as J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer, and John Singer Sargent as a powerful means of artistic expression in its own right. What I appreciate about Brigitte's practice is how she builds on this tradition while showing that watercolour can be as visually commanding as oil or acrylic.

From a collecting perspective, I believe works on paper deserve far greater attention. A large-scale watercolour can become an extraordinary statement piece, bringing sophistication, luminosity, and a sense of openness to an interior. Equally, watercolours can be beautifully integrated into a thoughtfully curated gallery wall, creating an engaging dialogue with oil paintings, photography, and other mediums. Brigitte's work offers a particularly beautiful balance of technical precision and painterly freedom. Her confident handling of light, colour, and negative space allows her subjects to feel both strikingly present and wonderfully delicate. For me, that balance is what makes her paintings so compelling. They show that artistic strength doesn't always need to be expressed through heaviness or intensity. Sometimes, it is found in the extraordinary control of something as fluid and unpredictable as watercolour."
