Estuary Wash, 20" x 30"
"My work explores how material behaviour can act as a point of orientation. Thinned acrylic is sprayed wet-on-wet onto textured fabric laid flat, allowing pigment to disperse and pool across the surface. In the final stage, the fabric is lifted and folded, introducing a moment of disruption before it is set into place. These works hold a tension between instability and grounding. Layers of dispersed pigment interact with the woven surface, creating depth that shifts as the viewer looks more closely."
Lise Anne Janis is an emergingCanadian artist and a recent graduate from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art. She works on raw, textured fabrics rather than traditional canvas, allowing the structure of the cloth to shape how the image develops. Colour builds gradually, forming areas of density and openness that remain in tension. The process is a way of working through ideas of place, time, and memory. She is am interested in how a work holds attention and how meaning emerges over time.
