“Although I have a very tiny bit of Indigenous blood, my pieces serve as an homage to our national cultural heritage, which includes native history and animals found in the country."
Blaine White is an interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto, whose work is
shaped by his academic background in Fine Art from the University of
Guelph and private study. Raised at the Canada/U.S. border, his
perspective is informed by a unique cultural intersection. This background
manifests in a practice that bridges traditional painting with contemporary
imaging techniques, often exploring themes of Canadian history, cinema,
and the natural world.
His paintings, primarily executed in oil on canvas, are characterized by a
distinct dialogue between realism and abstraction. White frequently depicts
figurative subjects, ranging from Canadian wildlife and Indigenous
portraits to scenes inspired by mid-century theatre and film, with striking
precision. These realistic portrayals are integrated into vibrant
environments filled with stylized geometric patterns. By placing lifelike
figures against these graphic backdrops, he creates a visual space where
the past and the present coexist.
